The invention relates to a method for cleaning out tank wagons after they have been used for transporting crude oil. The method is a combination of operations consisting firstly in washing and immersing the collected mass of sediments 4, then making holes 6, 7 in the base of the side walls of the tank and lastly cutting out and shredding the residues of the collected mass of sediments by means of a helically-moving pivoting high-pressure water head (600 bars) with outward reverse jets advancing as far as the centre of the waggon which is maintained under constant vacuum by suction 5 during the evacuation of the waste by means of reverse spraying. The method is intended to enable this operation to be carried out without human intervention in the interior of volumes containing collected matter that subsequently generates explosive atmospheres when the sediments are stirred up in the course of being removed.
