PURPOSE:To readily improve industrial value at a low cost, by cultivating a microorganism of the genus Brevibacterium (Bre) having the ability to produce D-alanine and tolerance to D-cycloserine in a culture medium, selectively producing and accumulating the D-alanine. CONSTITUTION:Bre lactofermentum ATCC 13869 strain is subjected to mutation treatment by irradiation with ultraviolet rays, etc., to provide Bre lactofermentum DCSR-26 (FERM-P 9619) strain (A) having the ability to produce D-alanine and tolerance to D-cycloserine. The resultant strain (A) is then inoculated into a culture medium containing a carbon source, such as glucose, a nitrogen source, such as urea, etc., and aerobically cultivated at 20-40 deg.C and pH 5-9 for plural days to afford a culture component (B), which is then treated and purified by an ion exchange, adsorption method, etc., to collect the aimed D-alanine.
