PURPOSE:To accurately calculate a cumulative distance and to perform DP matching correctly by selecting the cumulative distance at the time of an overflow according to the current cumulative distance, the last cumulative distance, and an overflow signal. CONSTITUTION:The distance dk between the feature vectors of an input pattern A corresponding to a coordinate point Ck where the cumulative distance Gk is found and a reference pattern B for matching is added to the last cumulative distance Gk-1 to calculate the current distance TGk relating to the point Ck by an addition part 11 by using the DP method. Then a selection part 12 selects the calculated distance Gk as the current cumulative distance when the distance Gk does not overflow according to the calculated distance Gk, last distance Gk-1, and overflow signal Co and selects the last distance Gk-1 as the current cumulative distance when the distance overflows.
