Method is for winding up a strip of material e.g. cold-rolled steel into a roll having a reel with expandle shaft. The shaft can be set in a first position in which it is pulled together and a second position in which it is expanded. The strip material is wound when the shaft is in the second position and the formed roll is removed by pulling the shaft into first position to wind on another strip of material. After a few turns, i.e. less than 20 have been wound on, the shaft is placed into a third position in which the shaft is more expanded than in the second position, so the clamping force between the shaft and turns is increased. The cold rolled steel is reeled after heating.
