The machine has a frame contg. bearings in which a flanged hollow shaft (I) can rotate. Shaft (I) is bolted to a winding mandrel, which has a hollow shaft (II) located in the bore of shaft (I). In the axial bore of the mandrel is a push-pull rod on which a stack of cup springs is located; and a plunger moves the rod to move segments on the winding mandrel radially outwards or inwards to alter the external dia. of the latter. The front end of the plunger is in loose contact with the rod, but its rear end is connected to a bush moved by a hollow piston in a work cylinder. The bush is kept coaxially in the hollow piston by limit stops, but it can rotate inside the piston. A simple design permitting the design of winding mandrels of smaller dia. than hitherto, and also providing trouble-free coiling or uncoiling. The changing of winding mandrels is also simplified, while the disadvantages of the coiler described in DE2850560 are eliminated.
