SUGAR AND STARCH FREE SPRAY-DRIED VITAMIN C POWDER CONTAINING 90 PERCENT ASCORBIC ACID

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:A vitamin C powder is prepared by firstly spraydrying an aqueous slurry of ascorbic acid and binder in thepresence of an absorbent. The amounts are selected so thatthe resulting powder contains at least 90 percent by weightof ascorbic acid, no more than 9 percent by weight of binderand from 0.2 to 2 percent by weight of absorbent. Then from0.2 to 5 percent by weight of a lubricant may be blendedinto the powder prepared by the spray drying step.Preferably microcrystalline celulose and mixtures ofmicrocrystalline cellulose and hydroxypropylmethycelluloseare used as the binder. The sugar and starch free vitamin Cpowder prepared by this process is free flowing, has anascorbic acid content of at least 90 percent by weight, iscolour stable under use conditions, contains a lubricant andis directly compressible into tablets which have acceptablehardness, friability, color stability, and disintegrationtimes.
