ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREHydrocarbon feeds are upgraded by contactinga feed, at elevated temperature and in the presence ofhydrogen, with a supported self-promoted catalyst pre-pared by heating a composite of support material andone or more catalyst precursor salts under oxygen-free conditions and in the presence of sulfur at atemperature of at least about 250°C. The precursor saltor salts will be of the general formula(ML)(MoyW1-yS4) wherein M comprises one or more pro-moter metals selected from the group consisting essen-tially of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn and mixtures thereof,wherein y is any value ranging from 0 to 1 and whereinL is one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligandsat least one of which is a chelating, polydentateligand.
