In this cleaning method of the electrode of the indicator (11) of a titration apparatus for determining the water content according to K. Fischer method, an alternating voltage (17) of low frequency is applied to both individual electrodes (5) of the indicator. This voltage must be sufficiently high that electrolysis (21) occurs, whereby it is formed of hydrogen to one of the electrodes and iodine to the other electrode. As the oxidizing effect of the iodine that the bubble formation during hydrogen evolution generate a strong surface effect. Cleaning is (further) increased by changing one or more times the polarity of the current in the electrodes so that iodine and hydrogen are formed at each electrode (5). The method of the invention avoids to a great extent the adhesion of impurities on the electrode surface.
