The pulp delivered to the papermaking machine has a higher tensile strength potential at the edge zones of the web than in the other zones. The increased tensile strength potential is provided by additives such as a wet strength agent and/or bonding agent as chemicals which increase strength, through the grinding of the fibres, by the addition of further strengthening fibres, or by the addition of fibres which shed water more easily to accelerate the hardening of the web edges and/or by reduction of the filler content in the pulp for the edges of the web. The edges are trimmed from the web at the end of the drying section, and the waste is returned to the pulp feed of the papermaking machine. ADVANTAGE - The technique reduces the flutter at the edges of the web, with a low pulp consumption, and without modification to the drying section of the appts.
