Process for microbial nitrate breakdown (denitrification) in water, and method for carrying out this process

A process for the microbial nitrate breakdown (denitrification) in groundwater is described, in which methane-containing gas, dissolved in oxygen-free water, is injected cyclically, via at least one injection well, into the groundwater in the subsoil. A particular advantage of this process is that germs are prevented from spreading to the injection well, owing to the methane gas-containing injection water being oxygen-free. In addition, an appliance for carrying out the process is described, by means of which both oxygen-free, methane-rich injection water and water containing neither methane nor dissolved oxygen can be generated, which can be fed to the injection well cyclically between each methane gas and oxygen injection, respectively.
