In order to manufacture an artificial stone from concrete, a trough-like matrix (12) made of soft rubber is inserted in a moulding box (10), and secured to the walls (16) of the moulding box (10) by means of a peripheral returned edge (32). After the concrete has set, compressed air is blown into the space between moulding box (10) and matrix (12) through a bore (24) which communicates with a channel (18) around the edge of the base (14) of the moulding box (10), in order to lift the moulding box (10) from the artificial stone. The slightly flexible matrix (12) is then pulled off the artificial stone.
