PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound useful as an intermediate for phenoxypropionic acid herbicides in a readily handled crystalline granule state in a high yield by dispersing the compound of an amorphous state in an aromatic hydrocarbon and/or aliphatic hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:An amorphous 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)propionic acid ester, especially an optically active isomer thereof, containing impurities such as 1,4-bis(1- carboxyethoxy)benzene (bis substituted compound) is dispersed in one or more solvents selected from aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene and pyridine and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as pentane, hexane, cyclohexane, heptane and octane preferably at -10-+13 deg.C to efficiently provide the subject chemically and optically highly pure crystalline particulate compound.
