PURPOSE:To make interchangeability between devices satisfactory and to improve the reliability of recording and reproducing by adjusting a tracking control system so that prescribed relation can be obtained between the amplitudes of first and second adjusting signals in two adjacent tracking while tracking control is executed on the first track. CONSTITUTION:An optical beam 2 on a recording carrier 7 is controlled to be positioned on a circumference track for adjustment, and frequencies f1 and f2, which are mixed by cross talk, are retrieved. Then, the adjustment of a target position is executed. The signals of the frequencies f1 and f2 are separated 31 from the output of an adder circuit 17 and for the signals, differential amplification 32 is executed. After that, a digital signal, for which A/D conversion 33 is executed, is sent to an MPU 26. This MPU 26 sends a gradually increasing signal to a D/A converter 34 while checking the output of the converter 33 so that the target position can be made gradually close to the desired position. Then, the value of the converter 33 is put into a prescribed range. When the target value is automatically adjusted based on a signal which is provided in the target position adjusting area of the tracking control, the recording carrier to be used goes to be reference and all the devices are adjusted. Thus, much more flexibility can be kept.
