PURPOSE:To produce large quantities of the subject compounds by culturing a microbial strain belonging to genus Actinoplanes and capable of producing 6-thioguanine and 6-thioguanosine. CONSTITUTION:Actinoplanes sp. (R2240) strain having the following properties is separated from natural soil. Morphological characteristics; aerial mycelium diameter of 0.4-0.8mum, forming semispherical spore, exhibiting high growth rate in a sucrose-nitrate agar medium and free from formation of aerial mycelium: physiological properties; growing at 10-30 deg.C, assimilating D-glucose and usable to assimilate inositol: biochemical properties; sugar composition of the cell wall of the whole microbial cell is xylose, arabinose, etc. The strain is cultured in a medium containing glucose, etc., at 20-37 deg.C for 2-10 days by submerged technique. Cells recovered from the cultivation product are extracted with a mixed solution of acetone, methanol and water, etc., and purified by ion-exchange resin treatment, gel-filtration, etc., to obtain 6-thioguanine and 6-thioguanosine having antitumor activity.
