PURPOSE:To safely and readily purify a glass raw material by storing the glass raw material in a container equipped with a melting chamber and plural trap chambers. CONSTITUTION:A container equipped with a melting chamber 1, a first trap chamber 2, a second chamber 3, a third trap chamber 4 and a vacuum vent 5 is prepared. Then a glass raw material (e.g. lump sulfur) is stored in the melting chamber 1 of the container and heated while evacuating the chamber. A process of distilling the raw material from the melting chamber 1 to the first trap chamber 2 is carried out as a first step and a process of backward flowing of the raw material from the first trap chamber 2 to the melting chamber 1 is done as a second step. Then process of distilling the raw material from the melting chamber 1 to the second chamber 3 is performed as a third step to purify the glass raw material. Consequently, chalcogenide glass having high infrared percent transmission can be readily produced.
