-12-ABSTRACTAn intumescent composite comprising a layer ofintumescent sheet material having a restraining layerlaminated thereto provides a superior intumescent barrierfor use in sealing penetrations through floors, partitionsand ceilings from smoke, fire, gas and water passage. Therestraining layer causes the char forming during anintumescent reaction to be generated in a directionalizedmanner so that cavities into which the intumescentcomposites are placed are optimally filled. Theintumescent composite can have holes punched in it and canbe used in fire protection applications where aircirculation is desired. In the event of a fire, theexpansion of the intumescent composite is in a directionwhich enable the punched holes to be quickly filled.
