CARBOXYLATED RUBBER PARTICLE AS MATERIAL TO TOUGHEN FIBER-REINFORCED COMPOSITE MATERIAL

PURPOSE: To improve the impact resistance of a fiber-reinforced composite by spraying a specified carboxylated rubber followed by drying. ;CONSTITUTION: One or two or more of carboxylated rubber latexes selected from among carboxylated styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile terpolymer, carboxylated nitrile rubber, and carboxylate acrylic rubber are sprayed and dried to provide a carboxylated rubber particle having a particle size of 1-75 μm, a glass transition temperature of 15°C or more, a carboxyl functional valency content of 0.1-5 wt.%. To 1-25 wt.% of this rubber particle 99-75 wt.% a thermosetting resin (e.g. epoxy resin) and 6-150 parts be weight to 100 parts by weight of the thermosetting resin of a diamine hardener are blended to provide a hardenable matrix resin product. The product is impregnated in a tape-like or fabric-like fiber base having a tensile strength of 100 kpi or more and a tensile elasticity of 2,000,000 psi or more, and hardened to provide a fiber-reinforced composite.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
