In a method of constructing a retaining screen which is intended to retain soil and debris dug from the ground when excavating a shaft into which concrete pipes, cables and the like are to be laid, and also to retain such soil and debris subsequent to excavation, there are used so-called ''planks'' in the form of profiled aluminium sections (30) which are carried singly from a storage site and placed in a vertical, upstanding position and then driven singly into the ground, to form shaft supporting walls.
