RESILIENTLY RELEASING OTTOMAN FOR MOTION CHAIR

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe front end of each side linkage of anottoman thrusting/retracting pantograph linkagesystem for a motion chair is provided by a link,pivotally mounted to respective front end links attwo vertically spaced sites. For each side, anottoman mounting bracket is provided, having agenerally vertical-plane flange and a transverseflange. The ottoman is secured to the twotransverse flanges, and the vertical-plane flange,which extends below the transverse flange, ispivotally secured near its lower end to acorresponding lower end site on the pantograph frontend links. The vertical-plane flanges of theottoman-mounting brackets lie outboard of and inplanes parallel to those of the respective front endlinks. A tension coil spring is provided at eachside for tending to keep the ottoman positionedacross the front edges of the front end links. Butif, while the mechanism is being operated in aclosing sense, the upper, rear edge of the ottomanencounters unusual resistance typical of someone orsomething being in the space through which theottoman must move to fully retract, the ottoman willtiltingly release, against tensioning of thesprings, permitting whatever is lodged, especiallyif it is animate, the opportunity and facility toescape, whereupon the springs will restore theottoman to its normal disposition. By preference astop is provided to limit tilting of the ottoman toabout 90 degrees, in order to avoid damage to thesprings which could occur were the ottoman to beintentionally tilted by a chair user's feet, e.g. sothe user, while having the ottoman extended, couldrest his or her feet against what, normally, is thebackside of the ottoman.
