A method of forming a spring for a reel unit comprising spirally coiling a spring strip (21) through a mandrel (5) and (6) to form an inner end (7) and outer end (8) respectively, passing the strip (21) through a reverse bias inducing unit (11) to impart reverse coil bias to part of the spring, preferably adjacent to the inner end (7) and connecting the inner end (7) to a mandrel (10) which is driven to coil the strip (21).
