The time constant or the half-life of an exponentially rising signal is determined by comparing the signal with a delayed version of itself. This difference is also an exponential with the same time constant and known final value of zero. The time constant can therefore be evaluated without needing to know the final value of the original signal. The required computations can be performed using an analogue delay circuit, or they may be performed digitally by taking samples at discrete intervals of time. In either case the output is a time pulse whose length is set by the time taken for the difference between the signal and its delayed version has fallen to a half of its first value.
