Targets recognizable using thermal imaging devices have previously had to be made recognizable by supplying energy to them. The intention is to avoid this. Coating compositions having a high reflecting power in the spectral region of thermal radiation are provided which contain metal particles of high electrical conductivity, and these compositions are used to coat targets which are recognizable using thermal imaging devices. These coatings reflect the celestial radiation temperature, which is different from the ambient temperature of the targets. In this way the targets become recognizable.
