Metastable metals or metal alloys are produced from the melt by melting a metal or metal alloy; inoculating the supercooled melt with a seed of a metal or metal alloy of different type of chemical compsn., thereby obtaining a metastable metal or a metastable metal alloy. Pref. the process is conducted crucible-free. Pref. the process is conducted by means of an electromagnetic levitation melt process or other floating melt device process. USE - Metastable metal/metal alloy so obtd. is useful in applications based on their electrical, magnetic or mechanical properties.
