The invention relates to a device for switching off the main pressure spring mechanism of an automatic push-pull coupling for rail vehicles which ensures automatic switching off or on of the main pressure spring mechanism of the push-pull coupling as a function of the position of the side buffer. A restraining component which receives the transmission element is attached to the sleeve of a side buffer of the rail vehicle with automatic push-pull coupling. The transmission element is provided at its buffer-side end with a sensor which ends at a distance a from the buffer plate of the side buffer and corresponds to the said buffer plate and has at its other end an adjustable stop whose bearing is connected to the central longitudinal carrier of the rail vehicle in a positively engaging and frictionally engaging fashion and is arranged at a distance b behind the rear pressure face of the main pressure spring mechanism in the installed and in the unloaded state.
