The fuel element storage facility comprises (1) a concrete outer casing, (2) a concrete lid having charging- and unloading openings, (3) a concrete base provided with air cooling channels, (4) a plurality of vertical storage shafts arranged in a square grid, in which the cans can be positioned on top of one another, (5) annular channels between the walls of the storage shafts and the cans through which cooling air flows upwards, whereby, (f) each shaft is formed by two tube sections pushed into one another and not rigidly connected, (g) one tube section comprises a short cylindrical tube (12) and an upwardly directed open collar (13) (h) the other tube section is represented by a cylindrical shaft tube (11) located in structure (10) having a support cage at its upper end. USE/ADVANTAGE - The arrangement can be used for the dry storage of spherical-shaped fuel elements. Buildings surrounding the storage shafts can be erected independently whilst the assembly/disassembly of the storage shafts is easy.
