Automated ''in vivo'' micronucleus test method for examining bone marrow and periperal blood in all relevant species. The hematopoietic nucleus-containing cells are separated by column filtration, whereby the suspension seeps through as in column chromatography. The mature and immature erythrocytes thus speparated are subjected to a ''percoll'' density gradient process for purifying or enriching immature erythrocytes (reticulocytes), then they are filtered before being flattened and positioned in a homogeneous manner by cytocentrifugation on object supports treated with polylysine; they are then dyed and finally subjected to a fully automated image-analysis process.
