The invention relates to a method and a system for detecting a body contained in an enclosed space. The detection is performed by emission of ultrasonic wave signals towards the said body and analysis of the signals re-emitted by this body. According to the invention, the movements of a reference body are previously classified according to certain criteria exhibited by the signals re-emitted by this body, and which each represent a movement of this body, the signals re-emitted by a body to be studied are analysed as to the presence and value of indicator criteria, representing a movement, and the type of movement of the body is determined by comparison with the indicator criteria of the signal re-emitted by the body under study with the indicator criteria previously established for the reference body. The invention can be used for the recognition of foetal movements.
