This support for binding microorganisms employed in water purification and treatment is characterised in that it is made up of fibres 2 of synthetic material which are entangled in irregular and sinuous loops to form a three-dimensional component 1 which has a voidage of between 85 and 99.5 %, these loops being mutually attached at some of their points of intersection 3 to form an open structure which is sufficiently flexible to be capable of forming packings with configurations adapted to the geometry of the purification bioreactors and to the purification processes used, but sufficiently rigid to retain its shape, the said structure having a sufficient tensile strength to withstand the weight of the biomass 4 attached to it under the conditions of use of the purification processes.
