The purification process comprises introducing water to be treated into a reactor (2) containing support elements (3) for the growth of a biofilm. The support elements maintain their movement in the water, are dimensioned through a filter (4) to be preserved in the reactor to release water from the openings of the reactor, comprise a tubular body and an internal wall defining a protected surface and allowing the passage of water, and are made by extruding a plastic material and then cutting the extruded material. The plastic material has a density of 0.92-0.96 kg/dm 3. The purification process comprises introducing water to be treated into a reactor (2) containing support elements (3) for the growth of a biofilm. The support elements maintain their movement in the water, are dimensioned through a filter (4) to be preserved in the reactor to release water from the openings of the reactor, comprise a tubular body and an internal wall defining a protected surface and allowing the passage of water, and are made by extruding a plastic material and then cutting the extruded material. The plastic material has a density of 0.92-0.96 kg/dm 3. The body has an internal surface protected against a collision with other support elements. The protected surface has a volume of = 1100 m 2/m 3. The body has a length (L) of 5-7 mm measured along its longitudinal axis, an average external diameter (D) of 5 mm, and ribs radially projecting according to its longitudinal axis and extending along its total length. The ribs have a height (h) of 1-1.5 mm, and are regularly distributed on an external surface of the body for each angular sector of angle (20[deg] ). The internal wall is separation wall that is radially and parallely extending according to the longitudinal axis of the body. An independent claim is included for a reactor for biological purification of water.
