The device is equipped with a mechanism intended to transmit a rotational movement of a mechanical member such as a pulley to another, by means of a link such as a chain, belt or the like engaged over the two mechanical members along a circular arc of possibly variable angle, and is of the type according to which the link and the mechanical members include parts which are intended to interpenetrate along the circular engagement arc. It is characterised in that at least some of the parts are capable of transverse movements for the purpose of mutually pinching the parts of the link and the parts of the mechanical members, means being provided to act selectively on only those parts which are located in a circular sector whose angle is at most equal to that of the circular arc for engagement on the corresponding mechanical member.
