PURPOSE:To prevent the embrittlement of a shaft core material due to the remelting diffusion of Cr in an outer shell layer into the shaft core material by providing an intermediate layer between the outer shell layer composed of high Cr type material excellent in resistance to surface roughness and wear resistance and the shaft core material composed of ductile case iron reduced in elastic modulus, capable of reducing thermal and residual stresses, and excellent in toughness. CONSTITUTION:This high chromium roll is constituted by integrally binding an intermediate layer 2 composed of graphite steel consisting of, by weight, 1.0-2.0% C, 1.6-2.4% Si, 0.2-1.0% Mn, =0.05% P, =0.03% S, 0.1-0.7% Ni, 2-10% Cr, 0.1-0.8% Mo, and the balance Fe between an outer shell layer 1 composed of high chromium type material consisting of 0.8-3.2% C, 0.5-1.5% each of Si and Mn, =0.08% P, =0.06% S, 1.0-2.0% Ni, 9-23% Cr, 1.0-3.5% Mo, and the balance Fe and a shaft core material 3 consisting of 2.8-3.8% C, 2.0-3.0% Si, 0.3-1.0% Mn, =0.1% P, =0.04% S, 0.3-2.0% Ni, =1.5% Cr, =1.0% Mo, 0.02-0.1% Mg, and the balance Fe.
