NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [R1 is OH, halogen, (substituted) alkyl, (substituted) aryl or (substituted) heterocyclic group; R2 to R4 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen] or a salt thereof. EXAMPLE:Sodium 2-{3-[N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)aminomethyl]-4-hydroxy-2,5- dimethylbenzoyl} benzenesulfonate. USE:An adjuster for coloring sensitivity in colorimetry of metallic ion used in chelating agent, which is capable of reducing measurement sensitivity without narrowing calibration range and causes fewer measurement errors with temperature in measurement than a conventional method. PREPARATION:A carboxylic acid anhydride such as sulfobenzoic anhydride is condensed with a phenol compound shown by formula II in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst of Lewis acid and then with iminodiacetic acid and formalin under an acidic condition to give a compound shown by formula I.
