PURPOSE:To give the invariably constant steering feeling to a driver by detecting the steering angle of a steering wheel at the time of a start, and holding rear wheels as they are in starting when it is in the reverse phase steering area of rear wheels. CONSTITUTION:A rear wheel steering mechanism 10 with an electric motor 21 used as a power source is controlled by a microcomputer 20 to attain the rear wheel steering angle and the steering direction determined in response to the vehicle speed and the steering angle of a steering wheel. When rear wheels 19 are set to the same phase as front wheels 9 and the steering angle of the steering wheel is larger than the preset value in the range of a small steering angle, steering is performed in the reverse phase. The steering angle of the steering wheel is detected by a steering sensor 27 at the time of a start when an ignition key is turned on, if it is in the reverse phase steering area of rear wheels 19, the reverse phase steering state of rear wheels 19 before a start is held, and a maneuver with a small sharp turn can be performed.
