ABSTRACTHydrocarbon, especially aliphatic and/orcycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, solvent solutions ofcomplexes selected from the group of(a) n-butyllithium, (b) sec-butyllithium and (c)isopropyllithium, with ethyllithium, in which theratio, on a mole basis, of the n-butyllithium tothe ethyllithium is from about 1:9 to about 9:1;of the sec-butyllithium to the ethyllithium isfrom about 17:83 to about 95:5; of theisopropyllithium to the ethyllithium is from about1:9 to about 9:1 The thermal stability ofvarious of the complexes in said solutions thereofhas been found to be outstanding. The nydrocarbonsolvent solutions of said complexes, especiallywhere said solvents are aliphatic orcycloaliphatic, have marked advantages overconventionally used hydrocarbon solvent solutionsof said complexes as catalysts or initiators inpolymerization reactions, telomerizationreactions, metalation reactions, halogen-metalinterchange reactions, and in the preparation ofmagnesium alkyls. Marked savings in cost are alsooachieved in the preparation of the complexes byreason of the materially lower cost or the ethylhalides in relation to the costs of the otheralkyl halides used in the practice of the presentinvention.
