The object of the invention is to have means for adjusting the synchronous slippage of the wheels in a locomotive whose wheels are controlled by at least one traction motor (26a-26c) receiving its energy from a motor (16) driving a generator. (18). Adjusting the wheel slip in the known devices entails increased costs and complexity due to the presence of sensors, necessary to determine the actual speed of the locomotive. In the present invention, a microprocessor (10) with programming control is used for the detection and regulation of synchronous wheel slip. The intensity and voltage of the generator current are measured and used in an empirical relationship to calculate an actual speed of the locomotive. A first order delay of the actual locomotive speed is calculated and compared to the calculated locomotive speed. If the compared values differ by more than a predetermined reference value, there is a synchronous slip situation and the power of the generator is reduced by a predetermined value. The power of the generator (18) is reduced progressively until the situation of synchronous skating is no longer detected. The cost of regulating wheel slip is reduced since it is not necessary to have sensors to detect the actual speed of the locomotive.
