A method and a device for the objective evaluation of the crushing of pile fabrics, particularly velvets for covering motor vehicle seats

The method first of all provides for the uniform illumination of a fabric sample (4) having a first, crushed portion (6) and a second, uncrushed portion (8) and the production of a digital image of the surface of the illuminated sample (4). The image is then examined by means of an analyser (12) which can evaluate the degree of greyness of the two fabric portions (6, 8) using an evaluation program. The difference between the value of the degree of greyness of the first portion (6) of the fabric and that of the second, uncrushed portion (8) is adopted as an index of the crushing of the first portion (6).
