Ginsenosides Rb1 and Rg1 enhance the availability of acetylcholine in the cortical and hippocampal regions of the brain and alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer-type senile demential. The Rb1 or Rg1 may be administered together with a metabolic precursor for acetylcholine and/or with a cholinesterase inhibitor. Pure Rb1 is located from a mixture of ginsenosides by a process involving vacuum chromatography on silica gel. Preferably, the mixture of ginsenosides is enriched in Rb1 by partition between an aqueous system and water ethyl acetate-butanol.
