The hip joint prosthesis has a metal part (8), which forms part of the femur stem. The metal part is fitted in a ceramic part (4) which forms the ball head of the hip joint. The metal part is not fitted directly into the ceramic part. Instead, the ceramic part has a tapered bore which receives a tapered metal bush (1) with a tapered bore (11) to receive the tapered end (7) of the metal part. The bush is fitted in the ceramic part prior to implanting. The taper of the end of the metal part is such that it is self-locking in the bore of the bush. ADVANTAGE - No particle retention during surgery.
