3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trialkyl NH4 chloride (I) is purified by mixing an aq. slurry of (I) (total solids content 70-98% by wt.) with an H2O-miscible 3-4C alcohol (II) to ppte. pure (I). Uses an aq. slurry of (I) with total solids content 90-95% by wt. of the slurry. The amt. of (II) added is 10-70%, esp. 25-50% by wt. of final slurry. The prefd. (II) is i-PrOH. The prefd. (I) is the tri-Me cpd., and the slurry is prepd. by reaction of epichlorohydrin with NMe3HCl in aq. medium, followed by concn. in vacuo at less than 50 deg.C.
