A first impermeable layer which is self-adhering when cold is produced by application of impermeable membranes (3, 4) comprising a self-adhering underlayer (5) over their entire surface with the exception of a heat-sealable edging (6) situated along an edge, on one side, and forming part of the overlapping border of the said membranes (3, 4), whose other part is self-adhering, this edging (6) being heat- sealed once the self-adhering membranes have been laid.
