The switch has a cooperating switch pieces (1, 2) with the arc obtained between them upon separation extinguished via an arc extriction gas. The latter is contained in a gas storage space (3) which holds a material (4) providing a gas which enhances the arc extinction characteristics of the arc extinction gas. Pref. the latter material (4) comprises a plastics which releases the gas in responsea to surface heatingm caused by the expanded arc extinction gas. The plastics material (4), may comprise 'PTFE' which is used to coat the inside walls of the gas storage space (3). ADVANTAGE - Improved arc extinction characteristics at relatively low cost.
