The IC engine has the upper part of its cylinder wall lined with a sleeve of ceramic material (2) which thermally insulates the adjoining metal part of the cylinder block. The piston is so designed tha the part fitted with the usual piston rings does not slide over the ceramic surface. The upper part of the piston is fitted with a ceramic piston ring (11). The ceramic sleeve (2) reduces the heat lost to the cooling water and so increases the thermal efficiency of the engine. USE - IC engine with high thermal efficiency.
