A circuit to assess the state of erosion of the cathode of an electron beam welding installation aquires at least one of the electrical parameters of cathode operation. Between the sensors and the evaluation circuit is pref. a data processing unit. Communication from a heating voltage sensor and the circuit is pref. by a transmitter and a receiver coupled by an optical light guide. USE/ADVANTAGE - Optimised preventive maintenance for E.B. welding. The cathode is changed exactly when necessary and not at some predetermined time period.
