The anti-theft device (5) is permanently attached to the bicycle frame, e.g beneath the saddle and has an apertured housing containing a motion detector for activating a spoken warning upon attempted removal of the bicycle. The device is pref. subsequently reset upon the bicycle being released. Pref. the motion detector is switched ON and OFF by the bicycle owner and controls a miniature cassette player coupled to loudspeakers on either side of the housing, with delayed actuation of a flashing warning light and/or an alarm siren.
