Monitoring of firing equipment, esp. an oil burner, involves detecting the flame radiation spectrum in the 220-350 (pref. 250-325) nm. wavelength range. System for carrying out the process includes a radiation detector in the form of a photodiode with a silicon carbide substrate (2) on which is deposited a p-conductive epitaxial layer (4) of silicon carbide of 6H modification, the epitaxial layer (4) being provided with a doping layer (6) from the surface by a recombination region (10). ADVANTAGE - Provides early warning of flame extinction and is not affected by scattered light or daylight. The system has high heat resistance so that it can be brought close to a flame, is maintenance-free and has a short response time.
