A heat storage system, which utilises the latent heat of melting ice, consists of a tube (1) which is buried in the soil. This tube is partly filled with water and is connected to a sump (11). The water (10) in the tube is frozen but leaves a passageway (8) above the surface of the ice. An evaporator (5) of a heat pump (14) is installed in the tube and embedded in the ice. A pump (6) immersed in the sump pumps water to a solar heat collector (3). The heated water flows back to the tube and melts some of the ice so that the heat is stored as latent heat. Refrigerant from the heat pump is circulated through the evaporator to refreeze the water. USE - Heat storage.
