The rear wheel steering mechanism uses a microprocessor control device (7) and a setting drive (11) for allowing the rear wheels (2) to be steered in opposition to the front wheels (1) at relatively low vehicle velocities and steered in the same direction as the front wheels at relatively high vehicle velocities. A steering locking device (14) hinders the adjustment of the rear wheel steering angle upon reaching a critical vehicle velocity, or upon reaching a critical rear wheel steering angle. Pref. the latter velocity is in the region of 20 km/h and the latter steering angle is between 2 and 3 deg. ADVANTAGE - Improved cornering characteristics.
