Bolted joint with elastically deflected flanges - uses elasticity to maintain bolt tension and maintain rigidity of joint

Two structural elements (18,19) with flanges (13,14) are fastened together with a bolt (15). Small thin strips of metal (11,12,16) are fitted between the joint faces on each side of the bolt. These strips create a gap (17) between the joint faces. When the bolt (15) is tightened, this gap is reduced by the elastic deflection of the flanges (13,14) which causes a corresp. increase in the bolt tension and prevents the bolt from becoming loose so that the rigidity of the joint is maintained in service.
