Bolted joint with elastically deflected flanges - uses elasticity to maintain bolt tension and prevent loosening of bolts

The initial tension in the bolts of a bolted joint is maintained in the following way. A bolted joint is made between two structural elements (7) and (8) by means of flanges (5) and (6), with a plain hole in one flange and a tapped hole in the other flange. One of the flanges (7) has a small dia. blind hole (4) on each side of the bolt hole. These blind holes (4) receive flanged tubular dowels (2). When the flanges are bolted together a gap (11) is formed between the flanges. This gap is reduced by tightening the bolt (9) so that the flanges are elastically deflected. This elastic deflection maintains the tension in the bolt (9) and prevents it from becoming loose. USE - Bolted joints.
