Telephone answering devices are known which have a control unit, in particular a microprocessor, to control the different device functions and the exchange of switching information with the exchanges of the connected communication system, and a magnetic tape memory and/or a digital memory to store speech signals, e.g. announcements of the called subscriber, messages of the calling subscriber. To enable improved utilisation of speech memories with a relatively low storage capacity, the telephone answering device has, in a manner known per se, a device to generate signal tones and/or intercept tones.
